Patanjalis Yoga Sutras provide the wisdom and the framework for the program and BKS Iengar’s alignment focused approach is inspiration for the asana classes. Luke and Mariko completed their 800 and 200 hr respectively teacher training courses at Byron Bay Yoga Centre where they lived and learnt for over 3 years. There Luke worked with retreat guests and teacher trainees facilitating asana and meditation classes and also worked in construction and the organic gardens utilizing his permaculture qualifications. He used his qualifications and passion for music to host Kirtan and other sound meditation sessions.
Mariko also taught public asana classes and in addition to that she worked as a certified Thai massage therapist while at BYC. Prior to that she has worked full time as a qualified health and fitness instructor in Japan running a range of different classes for over an 8 year period. Mariko’s interest in healthy cooking lead to her study of Macrobiotics which she is delighted to be able to share.
Asana being only one aspect of Raja Yoga this retreat also includes an introduction to the other elements of this holistic 8 limb system including philosophy, breath work, and meditation.

Yoga Retreat Nozawa Onsen Japan – Instructor Bobby
The other Instructor running the first session is Bobby.
Originally from Perth, Bobby spent the first 10 years of his working life in building and construction. In order to deal with the physical exhaustion and emotional anxiety that came from feeling stuck in an unfulfilling career, he turned to yoga as a way to restore balance to his body and mind.
After developing a strong, disciplined, and consistent practice he quit his job, moved to Melbourne, and completed his 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga teacher training with Power Living Australia.
He has completed an additional 75Hr advanced teaching and leadership skills mentorship with Duncan Peak, 60Hr Yin yoga training with Hugh Lee, 50Hr traditional Hatha yoga training with Octavio Salvado, and some more Hatha yoga and Yoga Nidra training with Rod Stryker.
Bobby brings a warm, grounding energy to his classes and is passionate about encouraging students to dive into the self-transformation that yoga provides. He accompanies his flows with upbeat and energetic playlists, and is humbled to share his love of yoga with you all.
